Plants Have Feelings, Too!

PETA, move over!  It's time someone spoke up for the rights of plants!

OK, i know what you're thinking -- well, let's just say i can hear the chuckles already.  But before you blow this off, THINK!  How will this affect society's view of human life -- or maybe i should say, what does this tell up about society's view of human life, God, the Bible -- you name it!

I think it speaks volume.  Now you speak your mind.  The usual rules apply.
Deadline is Thursday night, January 8, by midnight.

Read the article: In Switzerland, ethicists ponder the rights and dignity of plants

And again, let's hear from Chuck Colson:

  1. I don't even know how to respond to something like this. People's intelligence level is being slowly chipped away and people don't even know how stupid they sound. Someone tells them something is wrong or right and they immediately take up arms w/ it without taking the time to think about what they really believe. People are taught to be shallow and no one thinks anymore, one quote from the article really made me think “Where does it stop?” asks Yves Poirier, a molecular biologist at the laboratory of plant biotechnology at the University of Lausanne. “Should we now defend the dignity of microbes and viruses?”. When does it end, I mean really, Shakespeare probably never would have thought that doing research to better help humans ( for the most part ) w/ plants might hurt their feelings. People hundreds of years ago were not this dumb, we see it on tv, in the newspapers, everywhere someone is trying to make wrong things right by brainwashing america w/ one sided views making them to seem the right ones. Now we could use the excuse that plants have no higher intelligence or that they can't talk or show any signs of being "equal" to humans so it's silly and stupid to give them rights right? But, that is the exact same reasoning pro-abortionists use saying that the fetus isn't yet developed enough to be considered intelligent or entitled to speak for themselves. We as Christians can see that it is a life, Jesus said to be fruitful and replenish the earth, abortion is the opposite so of course we know that it's wrong. When it comes to animals God told us to have dominion over them, yes we still need to treat them right but, animals are not humans and we should find more important issues to argue about than whether a gold fish's dignity is hurt because someone flushes it down the toilet. God never said anything about plant's as far as I know.... In my opinion God put plants here to feed us as well as animals among other uses such as medicine. I don't believe God created plants w/ intelligence and I don't think he planned for us to become soooooooo completely petty and stupid! Yes, we may need to protect certain plants from becoming  extinct but, where do we honestly draw the line? Sooner or later everything will become 'sacred' and we won't be able to live or thrive at all. I think that america needs a good wake up call w/ a shot or two of common sense because I obviously don't see any anymore. We have willingly hid it in the dirt in exchange for a false happiness and acceptance from everyone because we are cowardly weaklings who can't stand to be contradicted. In the words of the some-dude comedian guy "PUT A HELMET ON!"

  3. Okay, so when I first read this, I laughed, because this is the DUMBEST thing ever! Seriously.. HOW STUPID CAN BE PEOPLE BE?! What this is telling me about society's view of human life.. - I think that we must think VERY LITTLE about the human life to even think about comparing our lives with the life of a plant or its "dignity!" There are SO many other critical subjects in the world right now to research and to spend money and time on, that are so much more valuable and important than worrying about a plants "dignity." I personally think this is all rediculous and a huge waste of time, mine and yours! God made plants for many GOOD reasons and needs in life, but NOT for us to worry about them having "dignity." People will fall for anything now a days and being a Christian that is VERY scary! Because God said that many will be decieved in the end times.

  5. Hi. This debate does seem pretty stupid at first, but after thinking a while, it makes more sense to protect plants. Plants may not have souls like humans, so it may not be as important, but these problems always start out small with something that doesn't make much of a difference, and then makes its way to human life and we can't do anything about it. Its not like they're prohibiting all modifications to plants, its just they have to be approved by the gov't before they are messed with. Like they said in the article, most plant modifications have been for the better. Im not for the destruction of plants, but if it gets in the way of human growth and industrialization, we need to realize whats more important. I do think that special care should be taken to make sure plant types don't go extinct though. The value of life has been increasingly going down over time, with abortion and such, and the careless destruction of plants might affect this rate, I dont know how much though. Its like that one instance that Mr. D was talking about where if it should be allowed for the FBI to read our emails. It doesn't seem that bad if its protecting us, but if its just reading emails today, what will it be in a few years. Things tend to get increasingly worse with time, and it always starts with something small that people dont have a problem with.

  7. This is the stupidest thing. My word. When I read about plant's "dignity", I couldn't believe it. I can understand some people being green, and not wanted to hurt the planet, but this is going a little too far. Everything that article said about Switzerland was pretty wacky. I saw the movie The Happening, and it was one of the strangest things I've ever seen. Parts of it were good, but just because I like the actors. Then end would have been really good, but they showed the whole 'attack', happening all over again, in a different country. I really don't have all that much to say about this, because it seems like kind of a waste of time to talk about it. :p Plant's are plants, and I guess some people just need to figure out the difference between them and humans.

  9. Well, like everyone else so far, I think the idea is stupid. (Ethan was, I think, referring to the wasteful destruction of plants, not hurting them.) The big difference between animal and plant rights is that animals have brains and nerves, plants do not. If you beat an animal, it will feel it, but you cannot hurt a plant. You may interfere with its life cycle, but it won't know the difference. Plants aren't self-aware. We as Christians don't even believe animals are, or at least not in the sense that humans are.
